Allah’s Most Beautiful Names

Learn, understand and reflect upon the Beautiful Names of Allah ﷻ and call upon Him by His Names.

Al-Asmāʾ al-Ḥusnā – The Most Beautiful Names of Allah

Allah revealed His Names so that we may know Him. Not know about Him in a distant or theoretical way, but know Him well enough to worship Him as He deserves, to call upon Him with confidence and to live with an awareness of who it is we stand before in prayer.

These Names are called Al-Asmāʾ al-Ḥusnā (the Most Beautiful Names). Each one describes an attribute Allah affirmed for Himself in the Quran or through His Prophet ﷺ.

What the Quran Says:

“Allah has the Most Beautiful Names. So call upon Him by them and keep away from those who abuse His Names. They will be punished for what they used to do.” (Quran 7:180)
“Allah – there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him. He has the Most Beautiful Names.” (Quran 20:8)
“He is Allah: the Creator, the Inventor, the Shaper. He ˹alone˺ has the Most Beautiful Names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth ˹constantly˺ glorifies Him. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise.” (Quran 59:24)

What the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ Said:

“Indeed, Allah has ninety-nine Names, one hundred less one, whoever encompasses them (iḥṣā’ahā) will enter Paradise.” (Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī 2736)
“Verily, there are ninety-nine Names of Allah; whoever preserves them (aḥṣāhā) will enter Paradise. Allah is Witr (One/Odd) and loves what is odd.” (Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim 2677a)
Note: Scholars explain that “iḥṣā’” (أحصاها/encompasses them) means: (1) memorizing them, (2) understanding their meanings, (3) worshipping Allah by them and (4) calling upon Him through them in supplication.

Three Things to Know Before You Study the Names

Allah has more Names than ninety-nine. The authentic hadith establishes a special reward for whoever encompasses these ninety-nine, but it does not limit the Names of Allah to that number. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ taught a supplication recorded in Musnad Ahmad in which he asks Allah by every Name He has named Himself with, revealed in His Book, taught to any of His creation, or kept in the knowledge of the unseen. This indicates that Allah possesses Names beyond those known to mankind.

The specific enumerated list attached to some narrations of the ninety-nine Names in Sunan al-Tirmidhi and Sunan Ibn Majah is regarded by many hadith scholars as an addition from later transmitters rather than the direct words of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. For this reason, scholars have differed regarding the exact enumeration of the ninety-nine Names. The Names presented on this page are derived directly from the Quran and authentic Sunnah, following a methodology informed by scholars such as Ibn al-Qayyim, Al-Ghazali, Ibn Hazm, Al-Qurtubi, and Abd al-Razzaq al-Badr.

As Ibn al-Qayyim explained, encompassing the Names of Allah means more than simply memorizing them. It includes three things: memorizing them, understanding what they reveal about Allah, and worshipping and calling upon Allah through them. Memorization alone fulfills only part of what the hadith intends. The ultimate purpose is for these Names to deepen your knowledge of your Lord, strengthen your worship, and shape the way you live.

Allah’s Names and How to Use Them in Duas

Knowing Allah ﷻ is a pathway towards loving Him and to know Him, we must begin by learning and using the names He has chosen to reveal to us through the Qu’ran and Sunnah. One of the best ways to solidify our knowledge of His beautiful names and attributes is by applying them in our duas. For every need you have, find an attribute of your Lord which suits it.

“And Allah’s names are the best names, so call on Him and leave those who violate the sanctity of His Names. They shall be recompensed for what they did.” (Surah Al-A’raf 7:180)
1. Al-Mujeeb (The One Who Responds)
