The mosque of Muslims has been martyred. This is a criminal act. Who gave them the right to demolish the mosque?”
Muslim journalist and social activist Huda Zariwala has been arrested in India’s Uttar Pradesh after police registered a case over remarks she allegedly made against Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath following the demolition of a decades-old mosque in Saharanpur.
Zariwala was detained on Monday, two days after the demolition. The complaint accused her of calling Adityanath a “criminal” and claimed her remarks had angered members of the public.
Adityanath is a Hindutva hardliner widely regarded as one of India’s most divisive politicians, known for using election rallies to stir up anti-Muslim sentiment.
Uttar Pradesh is home to 200 million people, a fifth of whom are Muslim.
