1. About Ummah Appeals
Ummah Appeals is a community fundraising platform operated by One Islam Media Network (OIMN) to provide individuals and organisations with an opportunity to seek financial assistance for legitimate needs, projects, emergencies, community initiatives, charitable activities and other approved purposes.
The platform is intended to help address genuine needs within our communities, particularly where individuals and organisations may have limited access to conventional fundraising opportunities.
Ummah Appeals is a facilitation platform. OIMN reviews appeals before publication, but the publication of an appeal does not constitute a guarantee, certification, endorsement, or financial guarantee by OIMN regarding the person, organisation, circumstances, claims, or intended outcome described in the appeal.
2. Who Can Submit an Appeal?
Ummah Appeals may be used by any legitimate individual, group, community initiative, organisation, institution or other entity whose appeal meets the requirements of this policy.
Applicants must provide truthful and accurate information and must have the authority to submit the appeal.
OIMN may request additional information or documentation at any stage before or after an appeal is published.
3. What Can Appeals Be For?
The scope of Ummah Appeals is broad and may include, among other legitimate purposes:
- Medical and emergency assistance
- Education and school-related needs
- Food and basic necessities
- Assistance for vulnerable individuals and families
- Orphans, widows and persons in difficult circumstances
- Disaster and emergency relief
- Community development
- Mosque and Islamic projects
- Humanitarian initiatives
- Livelihood and economic assistance
- Community events and beneficial programmes
- Support for legitimate charitable projects
- Other genuine personal, community or organisational needs
OIMN reserves the right to determine whether a proposed appeal is appropriate for publication.
4. Application and Verification
Submitting an appeal does not guarantee that it will be published.
Before publishing an appeal, OIMN may conduct reasonable due diligence to establish the identity of the organiser, the legitimacy of the request and, where appropriate, the intended use of funds.
Depending on the nature and size of the appeal, OIMN may request:
- Full name and contact information
- National identification or other appropriate identification
- Organisational registration or identification documents
- Evidence supporting the circumstances described
- Medical documentation for medical appeals
- School or institutional documentation for education-related appeals
- Project proposals, quotations, budgets or other supporting documents
- References or responsible persons who can verify the appeal
- Bank, mobile-money or other relevant payment information
- Photographs, videos or other evidence where appropriate
- Any other information OIMN reasonably considers necessary
OIMN may conduct additional verification after an appeal has been published, particularly where significant donations are received or concerns are raised.
5. OIMN’s Right to Review and Reject Appeals
OIMN reserves the right to:
- Approve or reject an appeal;
- Request additional information;
- Delay publication;
- Suspend or remove an appeal;
- Temporarily hold funds;
- Restrict fundraising activity;
- Require further verification;
- Cancel an appeal; or
- Take any other reasonable action necessary to protect donors, beneficiaries and the integrity of the platform.
OIMN is not required to provide a detailed explanation for every rejection or removal.
6. Donor Choice and Responsibility
Visitors to Ummah Appeals are free to decide whether or not to contribute to an appeal.
The publication of an appeal does not require anyone to donate.
Donors are encouraged to carefully review the information provided and, where appropriate, ask questions or conduct their own assessment before making a contribution.
OIMN does not pressure, compel or guarantee that anyone will donate to an appeal.
7. Offline Donation Process
At present, Ummah Appeals does not provide direct online payment through the website.
A donor wishing to support an appeal may submit an offline donation request through the website.
After receiving the request, OIMN may contact the donor to discuss the preferred method of making the donation.
Where the donor chooses to work through OIMN, OIMN will facilitate the donation and, subject to any necessary verification, 100% of the donation received for the appeal will be transferred to the relevant appeal organiser/beneficiary.
OIMN currently does not charge a platform fee on donations.
OIMN may temporarily hold donations where additional verification is required before funds can safely be released.
8. Direct Donations
A donor may alternatively choose to donate directly to the appeal organiser or beneficiary.
Where a donor chooses this option, OIMN may provide the donor with the relevant contact information of the appeal organiser, where appropriate.
In such circumstances:
OIMN is not a party to the transaction and is not responsible for money transferred directly between the donor and the appeal organiser.
The donor and appeal organiser are responsible for resolving any disagreement, dispute, loss or issue arising from a direct transaction.
OIMN strongly encourages donors to exercise appropriate caution when making direct donations.
9. Responsibility of Appeal Organisers
Every appeal organiser has a serious responsibility to use donated funds honestly, responsibly and for the purpose represented in the appeal.
Appeal organisers must:
- Provide truthful and accurate information;
- Use donations only for legitimate purposes;
- Not misrepresent their circumstances;
- Not submit fraudulent documents or information;
- Keep appropriate records of funds received and spent;
- Provide reasonable updates on the progress of their appeal;
- Inform OIMN of significant changes affecting the appeal;
- Cooperate with reasonable verification requests;
- Provide evidence of expenditure or progress when requested; and
- Return or appropriately account for funds where circumstances require it.
OIMN may request receipts, photographs, reports, invoices, statements or other evidence demonstrating how funds have been used.
10. Use of Funds
Funds must be used substantially for the purpose stated in the approved appeal.
Where the original fundraising target is not reached, the appeal organiser may still use the funds if meaningful assistance, progress or part of the stated objective can reasonably be achieved.
Where the original purpose can no longer reasonably be achieved, the organiser must inform OIMN and seek appropriate guidance before materially changing the use of the funds.
OIMN may require additional information or determine an appropriate course of action where there is uncertainty regarding the use of funds.
11. Updates and Transparency
Appeal organisers are expected to provide reasonable updates regarding:
- Progress toward the stated goal;
- Amounts received where known;
- How funds are being used;
- Progress of the project or situation;
- Significant changes affecting the appeal; and
- The eventual outcome of the appeal.
OIMN may publish or request progress updates to help maintain transparency with the community.
Failure to provide reasonable updates may result in an appeal being suspended or removed and may affect the organiser’s ability to submit future appeals.
12. Prohibited Appeals
Ummah Appeals must not be used to raise funds for:
- Terrorist organisations or terrorist activities;
- Violent extremist organisations or activities;
- Criminal activities;
- Money laundering or proceeds of crime;
- Fraud, deception or unlawful activity;
- Weapons or unlawful acquisition of weapons;
- Activities intended to facilitate violence;
- Hate, incitement or sectarian violence;
- Any organisation or individual subject to applicable sanctions;
- Political activities where prohibited by applicable law;
- Activities that violate applicable laws or regulations;
- Purposes that are contrary to the fundamental values and mission of OIMN; or
- Any other purpose OIMN determines to be inappropriate or unacceptable.
OIMN will not knowingly facilitate or encourage the financing of terrorism, violent extremism or other unlawful activities.
13. Fraud and Misrepresentation
Providing false information, submitting fraudulent documents, impersonating another person, exaggerating circumstances, concealing relevant information or misusing donated funds is strictly prohibited.
Where OIMN reasonably suspects fraud, abuse, financial misconduct or other unlawful activity, it may immediately suspend the appeal, hold funds, remove the appeal and take any other appropriate action.
Where required or appropriate, OIMN may cooperate with relevant authorities.
14. Holding or Withholding Funds
OIMN reserves the right to temporarily hold donations where:
- Additional verification is required;
- The legitimacy of an appeal is questioned;
- There is a complaint or dispute;
- The intended use of funds requires clarification;
- The organiser has failed to provide required information;
- There are concerns regarding fraud or misuse;
- There are legal or regulatory concerns; or
- Releasing the funds may expose OIMN, donors or beneficiaries to unreasonable risk.
OIMN will seek to resolve legitimate verification matters as reasonably and promptly as possible.
15. Donations Are Not Guaranteed to Produce a Particular Outcome
Donors understand that a donation is made voluntarily and that fundraising does not guarantee that the appeal will achieve its stated target or produce a particular outcome.
Circumstances may change after an appeal is published.
OIMN will make reasonable efforts to maintain the integrity of the platform but cannot guarantee the success of any appeal or the actions of an independent appeal organiser.
16. No Platform Fee
For the time being, OIMN does not charge a platform fee on donations made through Ummah Appeals.
Where a donation is received and processed by OIMN, the intention is to transfer 100% of the donation to the relevant appeal organiser/beneficiary, subject to necessary verification and any unavoidable third-party transaction costs that may arise.
OIMN will not intentionally deduct a fundraising commission from donations.
17. Privacy and Information
Information submitted by appeal organisers may be reviewed and stored by OIMN for verification, administration, safeguarding and accountability purposes.
By submitting an appeal, the organiser acknowledges that information relevant to the appeal may be published on OIMN platforms where necessary to help explain and promote the fundraising request.
OIMN will seek to avoid publishing unnecessarily sensitive personal information.
18. Changes to an Appeal
OIMN may edit the presentation, formatting or wording of an appeal for clarity, consistency, safeguarding, or platform requirements.
Material changes to the facts, purpose or intended use of funds should be disclosed to OIMN.
OIMN may require an appeal organiser to update an appeal when circumstances change.
19. Removal and Termination
OIMN may remove or suspend an appeal at any time where:
- Information is found to be false or misleading;
- The organiser violates this policy;
- Funds appear to be misused;
- The purpose of the appeal changes materially;
- Verification cannot be completed;
- The appeal becomes inappropriate or unlawful;
- Donor or beneficiary safety is at risk; or
- Continued publication may negatively affect the integrity or reputation of OIMN.
20. Islamic and Ethical Principles
Ummah Appeals is established with the intention of facilitating charity, mutual assistance, compassion and community development.
Appeal organisers and donors are expected to conduct themselves with honesty, trustworthiness, transparency, fairness and accountability.
Funds entrusted to an organiser constitute a responsibility (amanah) and must not be intentionally misused, concealed or diverted for an unauthorised purpose.
OIMN encourages all parties to observe the Islamic principles of amanah, sidq (truthfulness), adl (justice) and ihsan (excellence and good conduct) when participating in Ummah Appeals.
21. Disclaimer
OIMN carefully reviews appeals before publication and may conduct additional verification. However, OIMN cannot guarantee the accuracy, completeness or truthfulness of every statement made by an appeal organiser, nor can it guarantee the actions or conduct of an independent organiser.
Publication of an appeal should therefore not be interpreted as an absolute guarantee or certification by OIMN.
Donors should exercise reasonable judgement before donating, particularly when choosing to donate directly to an appeal organiser.
