900 YEARS OF ISLAM
Nine centuries after Islam took root in the Maldives, the Indian Ocean nation marked the 900th anniversary of its conversion to Islam on September 13. The anniversary is observed annually on the second day of Rabi-at-Thani. According to the traditional historical account, the Maldives’ last Buddhist king embraced Islam in 1153, ushering in centuries of Islamic rule. Today, Islam remains deeply woven into Maldivian society, culture and heritage, making the anniversary a significant milestone in the nation’s history.
